There has been an unprecedented decline in the production of rice, grain and staple crops in the country due to the promotion of organic fertilizer by the Government in 2020. This resulted in a decline in yields, reduction in extent cultivated and farmers refraining from cultivation. Unlike in other instances of food shortages in the past, the country does not have adequate foreign exchange for importing food at present. This situation has led to a continuous increase of food prices and shortage of rice and staple crops in the market.
Acute shortage of food in the future is inevitable if we as a society do not resort to appropriate actions as a matter of urgency. We need to focus on increasing the production and accessibility, wider availability and affordability of food. Therefore, we propose the following measures to be undertaken under this component of ERSP.
